This piece is inspired by traditional Chinese and Indonesian art. As a nod to my mix of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, I wanted 'Self-Portrait' to convey a strong sense of connection to the past. For me, this work reflects an internal battle with imposter syndrome, stemming from the feeling of not fitting in. 
 
Researching and recreating art that is tied to individual history is an incredibly powerful tool that can aid in understanding the lives that came before you; the lives that made yours possible. This particular artwork created an emotional union between my present and past in a way that goes beyond the superficiality of skin, hair or language.
